What have I been doing in recent days

Tuesday, October 30, 2001

I got the major assignment done and prepared and presented a class presentation. Needed a night off so watch a movie - Fight Club. I thought it was an interesting plot and gave me some food for thought. Only have a bit more work to complete before Vanessa comes at the end of this week. Milking is going OK but the weather has been a bit cold and raining at times.

Only one more week of lecturers to go!! That is both VERY good and a little bit bad. Good since Vanessa will be here and the end on those assignments - but bad since the three years at Worldview is coming to a fast close. I will be spending this weekend finishing off my major assignment on Internet Security In Missions. I have had fun and learned heaps from the many responses that I have already received. The results of the project is already in demand as many here at college wan to know how they too can communicate safely to thsoe in other places around the world.

The assignments are getting done. I just finished another one this arvo before I headed off to do the milking. I will be doing the milking for the next 4 weeks with the help of 2 other students. I didn't think I would get to do it at all but in the last 3 rounds of daily duties I have been assigned milking. It is actually pretty easy - except when you have to get up at 6.30am after going to bed around mid-night. That becomes a bit of a drag.

Over the weekend and today I have been progressing through the college work. Got another one completed and handed in today. Another one is about 80% done so all I have to really get done by Thursday is my major research assignment - Internet Security in Missions. I have most of the info, just have to write it up - all 4000 words of it. My typing is getting a bit faster but I would prefer to be ablt to touch-type. Maybe that can be a job for next year. And in less than two weeks Venessa will be back here in Tassie with me - BUENO!!

Had an easy prac this arvo. Went to drop some rubbish off at the dump then can back and worked on the internal college web site. Can't show you the stuff, but I have been wroking on a relaxationa area. Many of my ideas have some from this funny web site. Later on I will be doing some more assignments and trying not to waste time on the web projects that are also on my plate.

Some exciting news is that Vanessa will be coming here in two weeks to stay until we go to Queensland early next year for a holiday. Can't wait but will have too!!

I still have a couple of assignments to do before the end of next week. Have been busy helping a guy by building a web site. He is planning to run from Perth to Sydney in an ultramarathon this coming January so he wants/needs a web site so people can keep track and donate money to The Fred Hollows Foundation. More about the site will be available soon.

Another week gone. Only 8 weeks to go now. Life is going well and I have completed another assignment. Only 5 to go - and these are to be done by the end of the month. Still within reach, so long as I stay head down...

I am planning on living near Vanessa in Melbourne next year. What I will be doing there is not yet certain. There are many ways that I could get paid employment, but I am also keen to do some ministry (and therefore use some of the things the last 3 years at colleges has been equipping me for). I am still planning on getting back to Puerto Escondido for a couple of weeks mid next year as part of a trip to visit the US.

I have been thinking about youth and their involvement in mission for some years now. I am still in the category of youth and wonder why more of my Christian friends aren't getting into missions too.

I have come up with a few reasons:
1. They don't know of ways agencies can utilise them.
Groups might come to their churches from time to time, but too often they youth need to go and find the positions themselves.

2. Youth aren't often confident as to the usefulness they can be.
They will often ask themselves why they should get involved since they think they probably have the wrong giftings.

3. Youth aren't affirmed and guided.
Many of the youth with whom I talk, are suprised to here that they too can be used and that they have what it takes to go and live in cross-cultural situations. With a little input, we can get many more moving.

4. The pressures to stay and live a "normal" life are strong.
The way that the world offers youth so many options can be a strong attraction. Unless they see the true heart of God for those unreached, they will continue to live the life that the world is selling them

5. Friends and family keep them home.
Far too many like the comfort and support of friends and family. They think that they will lose all of that if they go overseas. Although many frinds are Christians, these good meaning friendships can be so strong that some won't listen to God's call.

Many other reasons could be stated, but these are just a few of my ideas.

We had the KidsGames today and it went well. Not as many people participated since it rained - but a good day was had anyway. I worked in the commentry booth working out the scores. It was hard at times trying to work out which team was which. Every time they kids moved to a new games activity station it seemed that the team took on a new name. Despite all that drama, we did get some winners, and the kids had a fun time. I am feeling very worn-out but will be revitalised when I going a chat (for the next long while) to Vanessa.

Went out for dinner last night to a chinese restaurant in town called Hoongfat. The chef was great/funny/weird. Quite enthusiastically ecentric, and a good reason to go back and see him and eat the good food again.

Just as I thought, Newcastle won the ARL last night. A good game to watch - and about the only game I have seen this year. I stayed at my friends at Evandale over the weekend and Jeff King came to stay for the night last night too. We stayed up talking, but it was as benifical as always. Also had another nice talk to the lovely Vanessa during the evening which helped to make yesterday special. In the arvo I did some study back at college and will continue doing some tonight so that I am prepared for the 2hr exam tomorrow arvo.

Today the college told us of a new way of doing the care share groups. Not sure what to make of it - but most of us aren't too keen on the new idea/system. Something needs to be done to imporve the existing system, but what has been suggested doesn't seem to be much of an improvement. We'll see how things go over the next few weeks though.
